Matching Eyeglass Frames to Face Shapes

You should consider three main points when choosing an eyeglass frame for your face shape, according to The Vision Council:

Eyewear should repeat your personal best feature (such as a blue frame to match blue eyes).
The frame shape should contrast with your face shape.
The frame size should be in scale with your face size.
Also, while most faces are a combination of shapes and angles, there are seven basic face shapes: round, oval, oblong, base-down triangle, base-up triangle, diamond and square.

Here is a further description of these face shapes and which types of frames work best for each, according to The Vision Council. A good optician can help you use these guidelines to choose your new eyeglasses.

Oval

An oval face is considered to be the ideal shape because of its balanced proportions. To keep the oval's natural balance, look for eyeglass frames that are as wide as (or wider than) the broadest part of the face, or walnut-shaped frames that are not too deep or too narrow.

Base-Up Triangle

This face has a very wide top third and small bottom third. To minimize the width of the top of the face, try frames that are wider at the bottom, very light colors and materials and rimless frame styles (which have a light, airy effect because the lenses are simply held in place by a few screws, with no surrounding frame material).

Oblong

An oblong face is longer than it is wide and has a long straight cheek line and sometimes a longish nose. To make an oblong face appear shorter and more balanced, try frames that have more depth than width, decorative or contrasting temples that add width to the face, or a low bridge to shorten the nose.

Square

A square face has a strong jaw line and a broad forehead, plus the width and length are in the same proportions. To make a square face look longer and to soften the angles, try narrow frame styles, frames that have more width than depth, and narrow ovals.

Diamond

Diamond-shaped faces are narrow at the eye line and jawline, and have broad cheekbones that may be high and dramatic. This is the rarest face shape. To highlight the eyes and soften the cheekbones, try frames that have detailing or distinctive brow lines, or try rimless frames or oval and cat-eye shapes.

Round

A round face has curved lines with the width and length in the same proportions and no angles. To make a round face appear thinner and longer, try angular narrow eyeglass frames to lengthen the face, a clear bridge that widens the eyes, and frames that are wider than they are deep, such as a rectangular shape.

Base-Down Triangle

A base-down triangular face has a narrow forehead and widens at the cheek and chin areas. To add width and emphasize the narrow upper third of the face, try frames that are heavily accented with color and detailing on the top half or try cat-eye shapes.

Color Analysis

The Vision Council's three keys to color analysis are:

All people have either cool (blue-based) or warm (yellow-based) coloring.
Everyone looks best in his or her own color base.
Eyewear color should complement personal coloring.
The main factors that determine the best color palette are the colors of the skin, eyes and hair.

Skin. Skin tone is the prime element in determining coloring. All complexions fall into one of two color bases — blue (cool) or yellow (warm).

A cool complexion has blue or pink undertones, and a warm complexion has a "peaches and cream" or yellow cast. Olive skin is considered cool because it is a mixture of blue and yellow.

In the United States, cool, blue-based complexions are more common than the yellow-based warm complexions. About 60 percent of the population are "cools."

Ski Boot Sizing & Buyer's Guide

Size

Ski boots are measured on a scale called Mondopoint. Mondo (meaning world, but in this case it’s just the skiing world) sizing is the length of your foot measured in centimeters. You can determine your Mondopoint size by tracing your foot on a piece of paper or cardboard with a pen, keeping the pen vertical against your foot so there is just a slight border. Measure the traced outline from the heel to the longest part of the toes. Round off to the nearest half centimeter. (If you don’t have a metric ruler, you can multiply the length in inches by 2.54 to get the centimeter equivalent.) If the tracing of your foot measures 26 cm (10.23”), then your Mondo size is 26.0.

When fitting (or skiing) ski boots, we suggest wearing a thin or very thin sock. While a thicker sock may be slightly warmer in some instances, the plastic shell and foam in the liner provide lots of insulation, and extra sock thickness between your foot and the boot shell diminishes control and response. In general, the best skiers wear the thinnest socks for this reason.

Beginner/Intermediate skiers should generally choose a boot close to their indicated Mondopoint length, even if it feels small. Keep in mind that the liner of the boot will compress after you ski in it a few times, and you’ll generate more space fairly quickly.

Intermediate/Advanced skiers should also choose a boot close to their indicated size or slightly shorter, but in a stiffer flex. Pay attention to the width of the boot as well, and choose one that offers a snug fit if possible.

Advanced/Expert skiers often choose a shell size slightly smaller than their indicated size for a super precise and responsive fit, and a stiff or very stiff flex. Downsizing in ski boots may call for a collaboration with a skilled bootfitter to make the boots comfortable enough for skiing.

How to Try On Ski Boots
The Proper Size
Slight pressure on your longest toes when the boot is buckled up is usually an indication that the boot will be the right size after some use. If the boot feels too short, try buckling the top buckles and flexing the boot hard – drive your knee forward with all your weight. This will force your heel back into the heel pocket of the boot and create more space in the front. Check the fit of the liner with it out of the boot shell to see if the source of the pressure is the toe of the liner rather than the hard plastic shell – if so, this can usually be stretched by your shop or bootfitter. Keep in mind that while it’s usually possible to enlarge a boot that’s a little too small, it’s virtually impossible to shrink a boot that's too big.

Shell Fit
A common method of measuring the length of the boot interior is called a “shell fit,” and it’s a good way to see if a boot is close to the right size. This requires removing the liner (inner boot) from the shell. Insert your foot into the bare shell and slide your foot forward until your longest toes just touch the end of the shell. Then check the distance between your heel and the rear of the shell – most people do this with their hand or a piece of wood of a known thickness, like a ½” dowel. Bootfitters commonly refer to this measurement in terms of “fingers,” which is pretty imprecise because everyone’s fingers are a different size, but tend to average around 15 millimeters (roughly 0.6”) for men. Using this standard, a “one finger” or “one-and-a-half finger” fit (15-22 mm or 0.6 to 0.9”) is considered a good performance fit. More than two fingers is usually too big, while less than one finger is getting into “race fit” range.

Note: Ski boot manufacturers don’t make boot shells in half sizes, so a 26.0 and 26.5 boot normally use the exact same shell. The difference between these two sizes is the amount of padding in the liner and/or insole thickness. For a shoe size conversion chart, check out our Mondo Point Size & Conversion Chart. If you try on a boot and it feels too small or too big, you’ll have to go up or down a full shell size which will be a centimeter larger or smaller.


Last

The length of your boot isn’t your only fit option. Like feet, every ski boot interior has a unique shape. Most manufacturers of alpine boots now make two or three distinct models or “lasts” to fit various types of feet. Generally, these lasts can be divided into narrow, medium and wide, and are based on the width of the forefoot measured on a slight diagonal across the metatarsal heads.

Narrow Last - Narrow lasted boots normally have a forefoot width of 97 mm to 98 mm, and are quite narrow through the midfoot as well. These boots are best for people with narrow and low volume feet.

How to Choose Good Winter Boots

When the cold winter months hit, little is more important than owning a good pair of boots that protect feet from the outdoor elements. There are several types of winter boots to choose from, which vary in style and design depending on the activity the boots are for. It is unimportant whether a person is running errands around town or is on an active outdoor excursion, wearing a protective pair of boots is crucial to staying warm, dry, and comfortable while the snow falls.


Know the Winter Boot's Purpose
Not every winter boot is equal. Some keep a person's feet warm in the cooler air, while others withstand wet and possibly more difficult conditions. Selecting the right type of boot is important depending on the usage required from them. Purchasing the right boot type is especially important for those who wear winter boots for work, hunting, or hiking.

Be Aware of Important Winter Boot Features
Winter boots provide important features such as traction, slip resistance, waterproofing, and insulation. This helps a person stay safe in the harsher conditions winter can bring. Good winter boots should protect feet, no matter the conditions.

Traction and Slip Resistance
To avoid slipping on snow and ice that could cause a serious injury, winter boots should contain slip-resistant features such as treaded rubber soles to grip wet and slippery ground. Lugs may also be included in certain pairs of winter boots that prevent buildup of snow on the bottom of the boot.

Insulation
Insulation is a key ingredient in the design of a warm winter boot. Depending on how far the boot goes up the leg, insulation keeps both the legs and feet warm. The amount of insulation in winter boots varies. Manufacturers often indicate this numerically in grams. The higher the insulation's weight, the more insulation the boot contains.

Water-resistant and Waterproof Qualities
Winter boots can have water-resistant and waterproof qualities, depending on the level of protection needed. For the times when a person is running errands or picking up the kids from school, water-resistant boots should do the trick. If exposure to ice, snow, or rain occurs, waterproof winter boots are necessary to stay dry.

When choosing a pair of winter boots to buy for the season, knowing the types of boots available allows a consumer to make an informed purchasing decision. Some boots are for hiking or other outdoor adventures, while others protect a person's feet in tougher terrains and colder temperatures when hunting or on the job.

Fit

Snowboard boots should fit snugly, but not to the point where they cause pain. Most boots need several days of riding for them to pack out and form to their true size, and as a result should be fairly tight when brand new. In a good fitting boot your toes will gently graze the boot’s toecap and you should be able to wiggle your toes inside the boots. Heel hold is another important factor. When your knee is driven forward your heel should remain in place; this is important for board control in toeside turns. Remember that socks also play a part in boot fit - a single thin to medium weight wool or synthetic sock is all you need. Boot Flex

Snowboard boots have different flex ratings, ranging from soft to stiff.  Boot flex is a personal preference but generally a softer flex is chosen by park and beginner riders. For advanced, all mountain riders and freeriders, a stiffer flexing boot is often favored. Boot flex ratings are not necessarily standardized from one manufacturer to the next, so flex may vary from brand to brand. Many manufacturers will give a number rating ranging from 1-10, 1 being softest and 10 being stiffest. At evo, we rate stiffness as a "feel" rating ranging from soft to very stiff. Generally we class manufacturers' ratings of 1-2 as soft, 3-5 as medium, 6-8 as stiff, and 9-10 as very stiff. Flex ratings and feel may vary from boot to boot.

Lacing Systems 

 

Traditional Lacing

Dating back further than Ötzi the Iceman, traditional laces are the tried and true option for your prototypical rider. By tightening your boots by hand, traditional laces offer the most customizable fit among the different lacing styles. Although easy to use, traditional laces can be difficult on your hands in harsh winter weather and can often loosen during the day. Despite this, many snowboarders stick with this classic system for easy lace replacement and a tailor-made fit.

Quick-Pull Lacing

Faster than traditional lacing systems. Many quick-pull lacing systems allow the forefoot and ankle/lower leg to tighten independently from each other, this is called zonal lacing. This type of lacing system is fast, easy, and can be tightened while wearing gloves. There are many different types of quick-pull lacing systems that vary from company to company.

HOW TO WEAR SORBET SHADES

HOW TO DRESS IN SPRING AND SUMMER TRENDS FOR YOUR BODY SHAPE

The warmer weather brings out the best in fashion.  There is always a lot of colour, florals and a mix of neutral and minimal styles that start coming through. It’s the perfect time to have a look at your current wardrobe and give it a bit of a revamp for the coming season, with a slight update to keep up with the Spring trends. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to dress in Spring and Summer trends for your body shape.

The first step is to determine what your actual body shape is.  We all have a perceived idea of what category we think our body shape may fit into, but in reality it is not always the right type. Here’s a detailed body shape guide to help every woman establish what category they fit into so that they can determine the type of clothing that will work with their body shape:
